In the space of one single generation, we’ve become accustomed to eating food that has never set roots anywhere near local soil. In the UK, the average banana alone has travelled a distance of 4,588 miles. Coincidentally, bananas sit at the top of the list of foods that we waste the most. It’s bananas (sorry I couldn’t help it!).
Combatting food waste isn’t only about reducing the amount of food that ends up in our bins, it touches all aspects of the food chain. Today, I'm focussing on the fundamental fact that not many of us are shopping local, despite the long list of wonderful reasons to buy locally-produced food.
This month, I’ve set myself a strict no-supermarket challenge for a variety of reasons. I aim to raise awareness of the abundance of options outside of the supermarkets, no matter where you live, and inspire you to shop alternatively (even if it’s just once in a while).
So, why shop local?
Celebrate the amazing diversity of our local, seasonal produce
Support Local Businesses
Reducing Food Miles (and the associated greenhouse gas emissions)
Freshness & Taste
Two weeks in, and so far – my so-called challenge has been a welcome walk in the park (or walk down a country lane, more like).
I’ll be sharing my experiences and favourite local food haunts later this month.
Make the choice.
Make the difference.
Make it local.
